SUMMARY:Finding Solace at Theodore Roosevelt Island (Online Class—Politics & Prose)
DESCRIPTION:Register\nPick up your late winter spirits with a virtual visit to Theodore Roosevelt Island\, a D.C. woodland memorial to our foremost conservation president\, who preserved 230 million acres of land during his presidency. Melanie Choukas-Bradley\, author of seven critically acclaimed nature books\, including the just-released Finding Solace at Theodore Roosevelt Island\, will take you through each of the seasons on the island with spectacular photographs of its trees\, wildflowers\, birds and animals and an introduction to the island’s trail network. She will also sketch the fascinating history of our very own Potomac island\, a gem hiding in plain sight between the Kennedy Center and the Rosslyn skyline. Melanie will introduce you to a Theodore Roosevelt you may not know—a lifelong naturalist and eloquent nature writer. \nMelanie is herself a naturalist and a certified forest bathing guide who will inspire you to explore Theodore Roosevelt Island and the many other natural beauty spots that we’re so blessed with in the Washington region. Learn about the medical research from around the world that demonstrates the mental and physical health benefits of spending time in nature. The class will allow plenty of time for sharing our local nature adventures with one another.

SUMMARY:Forest Bathing (online class — Politics and Prose)
DESCRIPTION:Register \n\nJoin Melanie Choukas-Bradley\, author of The Joy of Forest Bathing and Resilience: Connecting With Nature in a Time of Crisis\, for a forest bathing presentation and experience that you can enjoy in your own backyard or even your living room. Based on her research for these two books\, her forest-bathing trip to Japan\, and her experience as a certified forest-bathing guide\, she will give you a comprehensive presentation accompanied by beautiful slides on the practice of shinrin-yoku (forest bathing) and give you guidance to lead your own solo or small-group forest-bathing walks during our current crisis and beyond.\n\n\n \n\n\nShinrin-yoku\, which began in the 1980s in Japan\, is rooted in the traditional Japanese reverence for nature. Forest bathing is a mindfulness practice akin to meditation\, yoga\, and tai chi that involves tuning in to the beauty and wonder of your natural surroundings with all of your senses. Melanie is a nature and forest therapy guide with certification from the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides & Programs and she has participated in guided shinrin-yoku walks throughout Japan. \n\n\n \n\n\nMelanie will be joined by Ana Ka’ahanui\, co-founder of Capital Nature\, and fellow forest-bathing guide.
